Fire Safety at Work

Most workplace fires can be prevented, and a plan makes the difference when one starts.

Prevent it

  • Replace frayed or damaged electrical cords.
  • Don't overload outlets or chain extension cords together.
  • Keep paper and clutter away from heaters and equipment.
  • Unplug small appliances at the end of the day.
  • Keep exits, hallways and extinguishers clear.

Plan for it

  • Know where the alarms, extinguishers and at least two exits are.
  • Post evacuation maps and practice with drills.
  • Train staff to use an extinguisher (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
  • Include coworkers with disabilities in the plan.
  • Pick a meeting spot outside and a way to account for everyone.

If fire starts

  • Sound the alarm and call 911, even for a small fire.
  • Fight a fire only if it's small and you have a clear way out.
  • In smoke, stay low. Your head should be one to two feet above the floor.
  • Feel doors with the back of your hand before opening them.
  • Never go back inside until firefighters say it's safe.
